An Activity for Children and Parents

On 21 January, we celebrate Knuffeldag (Hugging Day) at the Kindertaalcafé. Knuffel is also the Dutch word for “stuffed toy”, which is why this edition is dedicated to hugging and stuffed animals.

Children and parents are invited to enjoy a morning of reading, play, and language in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Multilingual Story Reading

Volunteer teachers and parents will read “knuffel”-themed stories in:

Dutch
Greek
Italian
Bulgarian
Turkish

Is your language not on the list? Feel free to bring a book and read it in your own language.

Maria (Mimi) Potvin from Growing Up Multilingual will give a 20-minute session for parents raising their children multilingually:

“One brain, many languages – how does it actually work?”

Bring Your Knuffel

Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal? Bring it along!

The Kindertaalcafé is a place for families to:

Play, read, and explore languages together
Meet other parents and caregivers
Connect with Amsterdam’s multicultural community

Amsterdam is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, and Taalhuis welcomes students and families from many different language backgrounds — including young children.

Every two months, Taalhuis transforms the school into a language playground for families and young language enthusiasts. The program includes multilingual children’s book readings, a creative workshop for children, and a café with coffee, tea, and croissants. Between 12:00 and 13:00, families are invited to join a shared lunch buffet.

10:00 – Doors open
10:30 – Reading carousel starts
12:00 – Lunch

You are welcome to join at any time between 10:00 and 13:00 and stay for as long as you like. Feel free to arrive, leave, and return when it suits you. Teachers will be present throughout the morning, and parents and caretakers are encouraged to contribute ideas or activities.
