About this Event

Traditional Japanese weddings are vibrant celebrations based on centuries of refined custom. From the selection of an auspicious wedding date to ritualized gift-giving, wedding ceremonies honor family lineage, life stages, and spiritual traditions. Perhaps nowhere is this artistry more beautifully expressed than in Japanese bridal attire, yet the intricate process of dressing a bride is rarely seen outside of Japan, until now. This February, go behind the scenes of Japanese bridal fashion at a live showcase revealing the craft, precision, and drama of traditional wedding attire, presented with the generous support of Nitto Tire U.S.A., Inc., and hosted by master dresser Jane Aiko Yamano, Principal of Yamano Beauty College and President of the International Beauty Association.

In a classical Japanese wedding, the bride may change garments several times—a tradition known as oironaoshi (“changing colors”) believed to date back to the Muromachi period (1336–1573). The first garment is typically the shiromuku, a pristine white kimono symbolizing purity and new beginnings, followed by the vibrant iro uchikake, representing happiness, prosperity, and celebration. Finally, the furisode, with its long flowing sleeves, reflects youth, elegance, and formal sophistication. Every detail—from the layering of kimono to the precise arrangement of hair, wigs, and accessories—carries meaning, revealing the careful craftsmanship behind traditional Japanese bridal attire.

On this special afternoon, audiences will see these exquisite garments come to life on stage. The program begins with a talk between expert Jane Aiko Yamano and JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles President Yuko Kaifu, exploring the history and meaning behind each bridal look, followed by a rare backstage view of the preparation and teamwork usually hidden from view. The showcase culminates in a stunning live demonstration as a bride is transformed from white shiromuku through colorful iro uchikake and elegant furisode, concluding with the removal of the traditional wig and a final reveal in a Western wedding dress. Join us for an elegant afternoon celebrating the fashion, craftsmanship, and tradition of a Japanese bride’s special day.
