About this Event
Kids Intro to Sewing Class - 2 Part Series
In this two-part workshop, students will transform their choice of fabric (thrifted sheets encouraged!) into their very own pair of custom pajama pants. Designed specifically for 3rd–5th graders, this class covers the basics of using a home sewing machine, how to follow a simple pattern and the fundamentals of garment construction.
Students will learn how to lay out and cut fabric, sew straight seams and create a comfy elastic waistband. By the end of the second session, they’ll have a finished pair of PJ pants to wear home and a reusable pattern to keep making more! No prior sewing experience is required—just a desire to create.
A Note for Parents: This class is designed for absolute beginners and the teacher-to-student ratio is 1:4, but sewing does require patience and the ability to follow safety instructions. Please only sign your child up if you think they are ready for a focused, nearly two-hour technical task.
Requirements:
- Fabric & Thread: Please send your child to class with one pre-washed thrifted flat sheet (Twin or larger) OR 2 yards of pre-washed soft cotton/flannel, plus one spool of matching all-purpose thread. Waistband elastic is included in the class fee.
- Size: At registration, please provide your child’s current pant size so the instructor can have their specific pattern ready to go.
Parent Participation:
Parents are not expected to stay, but if you’d like to stay and assist your child, you are more than welcome. However, please note that our classroom is cozy; if we have a full house, we may ask parents to rotate or hang out just outside the door to ensure the kids have enough "elbow room" to sew safely.
NOTE: This class is for students currently in to 3rd -5th grade only. Please send an email to [email protected] letting us know your childs pant size by June 1st!
