Inspired by patterns found in nature, kids will explore repetition, texture, and design while creating a spring-themed artwork.
About this Event

In this March session of Saturday Art Lab, children will explore how artists observe and interpret the natural world through color, pattern, and close looking. Drawing inspiration from Claude Monet’s landscapes to Georgia O’Keeffe’s bold floral studies, students will discover how artists see nature in both wide, impressionistic views and detailed, up-close perspectives.

We’ll begin by learning about these artists’ lives and creative approaches, comparing how Monet captured light, movement, and atmosphere, while O’Keeffe focused on shape, form, and the beauty of natural details. Through guided discussion, kids will practice noticing patterns in leaves, flowers, water, and landscapes, learning how nature can inspire endless artistic ideas.

During studio time, children will create a nature-inspired mixed-media artwork, experimenting with color blending, repetition, texture, and scale. They may choose to paint a flowing landscape, zoom in on a flower or natural object, or combine both approaches to create a unique spring composition.

The session concludes with a reflection and share circle, where kids can talk about what they noticed in nature, how they made artistic choices, and how different ways of seeing can create very different artworks.

Skills & Learning Highlights:

  • Understanding how artists interpret nature
  • Comparing artistic styles: Impressionism and modern abstraction
  • Observational skills and attention to detail
  • Pattern, texture, color blending, and composition
  • Creative confidence and visual storytelling

Children will leave with a finished artwork and a deeper appreciation for the natural world — learning that art can come from both big outdoor scenes and the smallest details we often overlook.
