Khubsurat Bahu (A Musical Play) by Naag Bodas
Khubsurat Bahu is a satirical musical play written by Naag Bodas, which blends humor, music, and social commentary to explore family relationships, rural life, and societal attitudes toward beauty and women. The play is set in a small village and revolves around a simple household whose lives change dramatically after the arrival of a beautiful bride.
The story centers on Hari, a young man who has been raised by his aunt Chachi, a widow who devoted her life to bringing him up. When Hari grows up, Chachi arranges his marriage with Suman, a stunningly beautiful girl from Dholpur. After her arrival, Suman’s beauty becomes the talk of the entire village, and people start referring to her as the “beautiful daughter-in-law.”
However, Chachi’s own loneliness and emotional frustrations begin to surface. Her possessive nature prevents Hari and Suman from developing a normal marital relationship, and she constantly interferes in their lives. At the same time, the villagers, especially some mischievous young men, become fascinated by Suman’s beauty, creating several humorous and awkward situations.
Through lively dialogues, comic moments, and musical sequences, the play portrays the tensions, misunderstandings, and emotional conflicts within the family. A turning point occurs when an incident involving a local troublemaker creates chaos and forces the family to confront their insecurities and mistakes. Gradually, realization dawns, relationships begin to heal, and harmony is restored in the household.
Khubsurat Bahu uses humor, music, and satire to highlight themes of female dignity, family bonds, and the consequences of narrow-minded social attitudes, delivering an entertaining yet meaningful theatrical experience. As time passes and boredom sets in, the villagers struggle to balance the solemnity of death with the discomfort of their situation. In an attempt to preserve decorum and pass the time meaningfully, Pandit Ji proposes conducting the tribute ceremony right there in the ruins.
