Following April’s duo recital with her sister, Khatia Buniatishvili takes centre stage in a programme exploring the relationship between Chopin and prolific woman-of-letters George Sand.Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin de Francueil - better known as the writer George Sand - met Chopin in 1836, and over the next decade theirs was a union that witnessed many of the Polish composer’s greatest works, including the last two piano sonatas. Sand’s novel Lucrezia Floriani draws on their life together, but tonight Buniatishvili rebalances that portrait with an illuminating profile in music as well as words.
The Georgian pianist (and Barbican regular) likes to shake things up. For The Evening Standard, ‘Buniatishvili’s individuality’ is ‘evident throughout the jaw-dropping, heart-breaking, hair-raising performance’. When she appeared here in 2022 one critic observed that this was ‘music-making for now, with her brand of emotional engagement often at the point of meltdown’.
