Discover the essential role milkweed and other keystone native plants play in supporting Pennsylvania’s pollinators and ecosystem health at the "Keystone Natives: Powerhouse Plants for Pollinators" program hosted by the Penn State Master Gardeners of Cumberland County on Saturday, June 13, 9:30am-12:00pm, at the Penn State Extension office located at 310 Allen Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
The program opens with an introduction to milkweed, a vital native species that provides critical food and habitat resources throughout the growing season, followed by the presentation "Keystone Natives: Powerhouse Plants for Pollinators." Participants will learn what keystone plants are and why these “powerhouse” native species are fundamental to sustaining pollinators and maintaining biodiversity. The session highlights how keystone natives deliver far greater ecological benefits than non-native plants and how their use in managed and home landscapes can strengthen habitat, support wildlife, and promote a more resilient environment. Participants will tour the Allen Road pollinator gardens showcasing native plants that nourish wildlife. The session concludes with each attendee planting a 14-inch pollinator container garden featuring seven nectar and larval host plants to take home. All supplies are provided.
