About this Event
Kevin Lee Sun, a Sacramento native, presents his solo recital program “The Essence of the Soul." Inspired by European, Middle Eastern, and Native American spiritual beliefs, Dr. Sun’s program invites the listener into a meditation on "spirituality, loss, and the intimacy found within life's small joys." So writes Colin Kemper in explaining his work Buffalo (2020), the centerpiece of the recital. Music by canonical masters d'Anglebert and Brahms, 20th-century mavericks Stockhausen and Scelsi, and living composer Hyo-shin Na round out this immersive and contemplative program that breathes, chants, and soulfully sings.
Kevin Lee Sun is Assistant Professor of Piano at Duquesne University. The sole pianist to be named Finalist of the 2021 Berlin Prize for Young Artists in Germany, Sun interprets music with “probing seriousness” (Performing Arts Monterey Bay) and “a stunningly beautiful palette of colors” (Peninsula Reviews). He has performed a diverse repertoire around the world, including at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna, and the Banff Centre in Canada. A native of Sacramento, California, Sun holds degrees from Stanford University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Eastman School of Music.
