About this Event
We will meet at the bus stop on New Road, near Kett's Oak Rd, Hethersett, and walk on field margins and through woodland to arrive at the iconic Kett’s Oak. Approx 2-3 hours.
Most of this Norfolk countryside has no public access, but that’s not unusual in Norfolk where we have one of the lowest percentages of access to land – less than 1% in most of the county, especially around the large city of Norwich. And even less access to ancient trees, woodlands and forests.
Kett’s Oak played a pivotal role as a rallying point for the army of Robert and William Kett, who joined a peasant revolt against enclosures in 1549. Although the tree is accessible to the public from the road and a permissive walk, most of the countryside in the area is not.
Some of the struggles for freedom and fairness that Robert Kett and his fellow rebels fought for are still going on today - almost 500 years later. The lack of access for ordinary people to walk or enjoy other outdoor activities is still extremely limited.
Right to Roam is calling for responsible access to land and water, and for legislation to give clear rights. Join us on a scenic and enjoyable walk and hear more about the campaign and the story of Kett’s Oak.
The walk will partly be on private land. As we walk we will be following the guidelines set by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, respecting the land and adopting the philosophy of 'leaving a positive trace'. We will appoint a couple of spokespeople to talk to them if we do meet someone who might challenge us. Trespass is a civil matter, not criminal, as long as we behave respectfully. We have an information card to give out and will talk about at the start.
Taking part in the walk is done at your own risk.
The walk should take no longer than three hours, probably less (TBC), and we will go at the pace of the slowest.
