Kendall Dunkelberg will read from , a luminous collection rooted in the natural world around his Mississippi home and shaped by memories of rural Iowa, Flanders, and other traveled landscapes. These poems trace cycles of loss and renewal in response to illness, death, and the shared grief of the recent pandemic while uncovering profound insight in the overlooked details of daily life. Mortality, symbolized in the falling of familiar trees, is balanced by the creative force of birdsong. Ranging from narrative free verse to haiku sequences, pantoums, ghazals, and mythic retellings, the poems draw on wildflowers, snakes, birds, and trees to illuminate how art emerges from grief.
John Miller will read from , a moving exploration of place, memory, and mourning set along the waterways and backroads of the Gulf South. Beginning in the final days of the speaker’s father, the collection expands into coastal journeys, dictionary searches for solace, and meditations on how geography shapes identity. These poems confront personal and national loss alike, blending history and recollection into brackish waters that reveal vulnerability while insisting on the possibility of hope for futures we cannot yet see.
Come experience two powerful poetic voices in conversation with landscape, memory, and resilience, and stay for discussion and community afterward.
