About this Event
Note: This is the second of two free public meetings being offered in the Houston area.
KEEP BIG BEND WILD, a group of former National Park Service staff, longtime park volunteers and supporters, will host two free public presentations this month to discuss the proposal to extend the Border Wall into Big Bend National Park and the future of wilderness protection in Big Bend.
Large undeveloped areas of the park were recommended for wilderness designation more than 40 years ago but have never been formally added to the national wilderness system by Congress. Advocates say that lack of permanent protection leaves the park vulnerable to large-scale infrastructure projects such as border wall construction.
The presentations will explain the proposal, discuss the park’s conservation status, and outline why organizers believe the project could fundamentally alter the character of Big Bend National Park.
Speaker Evelyn L. Merz of KEEP BIG BEND WILD will discuss:
• The proposed border wall through Big Bend National Park
• Why wilderness designation for parts of the park has remained unresolved for decades
• How previous cooperation between the National Park Service and U.S. Border Patrol has addressed border security without large infrastructure inside the park
• What attendees can do to help protect the future of Big Bend
