The flow of water belongs to meThe flow of water belongs to you
Welcome to the series ‘Waikato Te Awa’ portraying fourteen symbolic taonga which hold the life force of our ancestral river. These were carved by world-renowned carver Fred Graham ONZM — Ngaati Korokii Kahukura between 2004 and 2014. Graham has influenced and mentored many like-minded carvers in the world of whakairo, leaving them feeling inspired.
Beginning at its source at Ruapehu maunga, and flowing through to the currents of Ngaaruawaahia, the standing place of the Kiingitanga, the river then makes its way through to Titiraupenga mountain of Raukawa, and ends at Te Puuaha o Waikato, Port Waikato where the two tides meet.
The Waikato awa is our source of life, our well-being, and is a living entity. As you walk through the series you will feel the flow of the water around the room and the life it brings to you, as it also brought life for our ancestors.
