About this Event

Some artists write songs.
Katie Dahl writes worlds.

Rooted in the landscapes and communities of Door County, Dahl’s music blends literary storytelling, emotional honesty, and wry humor into songs that feel deeply personal yet universally human.

A respected voice in contemporary folk, Dahl has been praised for her “razor-sharp lyrics and hearty, soulful voice” (American Songwriter), and her music has been featured on Wisconsin Public Radio, where hosts highlighted her “poetic, incisive lyrics and evocative melodies.”

A Folk Artist — and an Acclaimed Playwright

In addition to her work as a songwriter, Dahl is also a celebrated playwright. Her original musical The Fisherman’s Daughters, for which she wrote the book, music, and lyrics, recently premiered at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, one of the Midwest’s premier stages.

Set in early 20th-century Door County, the show tells the story of two sisters whose family fishing homestead is threatened by the creation of Peninsula State Park. The production was praised as warm, heartfelt, and joyful, bringing Dahl’s lyrical storytelling to the theatrical stage.

That same gift for storytelling defines her music.

A Voice That Connects

Dahl’s songs explore belonging, love, loss, humor, and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Fellow songwriter Dar Williams has said that Dahl’s songs feel like journeys grounded in a deep sense of place, while folk radio hosts have praised the clarity and purity of her voice.

Her performances are intimate and engaging — filled with memorable melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and stories that bring listeners closer to the songs.

Why This Show Will Be Special

In a large venue, music can feel distant.

At White Lilac, every lyric lands. Every story is heard. Every note matters.

With just a small number of seats in a room built for listening, audiences experience artists the way they were meant to be heard — up close, attentive, and fully present.

For a songwriter as thoughtful and literary as Katie Dahl, it’s the perfect setting.

If you love artists like:

Dar Williams • Patty Griffin • John Prine • Gillian Welch

…this is a rare opportunity to experience a songwriter who carries that same tradition of honest, intelligent folk music.

Come spend an evening inside the songs.
