Soprano Kathleen Morrison, in collaboration with pianist Mimi Park, presents her first-year Master of Music recital, an evening that follows the voice of love as it shifts across different states of being, from the immediate and physical to the deeply interior.Selections from Berlioz’s "Les nuits d’été" open the program in a world of longing and atmosphere, where love is shaped through memory, nature, and distance. This sense of intimacy expands in Puccini’s Act I duet from 'Tosca', performed with special guest tenor Ernesto Ramirez, where love becomes urgent and physical.
Following the intermission, James Wright’s "Quilled Sonnets", including the Western Canadian premiere of 'Lost Sonnet', offers a contemporary perspective in which love is refracted through fragmentation. "Was I not born to shape the air into notes?"
The recital concludes with Desdemona’s "Ave Maria" from Verdi’s 'Otello', alongside selections from Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder and Urlicht. In Verdi’s final act, love is transformed under the weight of loss, as Desdemona’s prayer unfolds in a moment of vulnerability and devotion. Mahler’s songs carry this inward journey further. 'Urlicht' offers a direct and luminous expression of spiritual longing, while 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen', one of the most iconic songs in the repertoire, withdraws from the world into stillness and transcendence, arriving at a final state of being: “I live alone in my heaven, in my love, in my song.”
