České skladatelky: A Walk Through Czech History in MusicThe rich tradition of Czech music-making, famous for its incisive rhythms and the legacy of folk music, has become synonymous with Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček and Martinů. This concert expands our understanding of Czech music by examining the women by their side. Take, as a short example, Antonín Dvořák. His wife and two daughters were not only active performers of his music, but also composed and assisted him in editing his compositions for publication. We will hear piano compositions by his oldest daughter, Otilie.
In this concert, Katlyn Bouska brings fresh perspectives on the development of Czech music as she presents both newly-and re-discovered manuscripts by Czech women. We will hear new names such as Sláva Vorlová or Julie Reisserová, and ones more familiar: Otylie Dvořáková and Kateřina Smetanová. Join Bouska as she shares discoveries from her upcoming book, “The Women of Czech Music” and leads us in an evening celebrating the true fullness of the rich legacy of Czech music.
Pianist Katelyn Bouska is an academic and an advocate, passionate about uncovering music lost to the passage of time. In her programming, she explores the boundaries between audience and performer, the past and the present. She brings to life these composers drawing from her deep research, cultural explorations and innovative programming. The main interests driving her research is her Czech-American heritage, women in music, and her desire to expand the canon of classical music.
Bouska is currently based in Prague finishing her book for Karolinum Press, “Czech Women in Music,” and teaching remotely at the Curtis Institute of Music.
