Karl Blau, raised on Samish Island, WA, grew up as the only woodwind player in a family of brass musicians. His mother insisted on classical music education for all her children, and Blau took classical guitar lessons despite his preference for his pink electric guitar. Influenced by his uncle Tom Atwood, Blau shifted his focus from visual art to rock music, playing metal drums in high school. His early musical career began with the band Captain Fathom, performing at local festivals. Blau's connection to Anacortes, WA deepened as he collaborated with local musicians and recorded experimental music at the indie record store The Business, owned by Bret Lunsford of Beat Happening.
Blau's recording career flourished in the 2000s, producing records for artists in the Pacific Northwest and releasing a series of 4-track albums through his Kelp! series. His work with K Records further expanded his audience, and he produced numerous albums for the label. Blau's collaborations included touring with Laura Veirs and joining the Seattle band EARTH. In 2015, he opened the Anacortes Music Channel, a venue and 24/7 streaming station for local music. He also launched Show Chime, a music magazine, and helped establish the Anacortes Music Project, a non-profit preserving the town’s musical heritage.
