Kanopy’s interactive “The Magic Language of Modern Dance Legend José Limón + his Mexican Roots” introduces modern dance by featuring Limón’s personal story as a Mexican American immigrant and the importance of historic context, cultural heritage and identity in dance choreography. Limón famously said, “All choreography is autobiographical, whether one intends it or not.”The program and movement class, based on Limón’s expressive technique, will be presented by Edward Salas, a professional dancer with the Kanopy Dance Company since 2022, whose own family emigrated from Mexico and who is a gifted and engaging teacher. Salas, who earned a BA in dance at the University of California-Fullerton, has also completed Limón intensives in California and New York City and has extensively trained with leading Limón practitioners.
The 1pm performance will be American Sign Language interpreted. Please email [email protected] at least one hour ahead to be seated within sight of the interpreter for live performances.
