Join Jordan Abel, Kim Thúy, David Chariandy, Sharon Bala, and McClelland & Stewart publisher Stephanie Sinclair for a celebration of Kanata Classics, a new series launched this year by McClelland & Stewart to mark the 10th anniversary of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Report. This event will be hosted live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park and also available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/st7WXvr1bcw
From McClelland & Stewart: "True reconciliation can only exist with the acknowledgement of history and the inclusion of Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices working together to create a new conversation to lead the literary discourse on the nature of this country, its culture, and its history. In this conversation we look to celebrate the launch of Kanata Classics, how this new series advances this aim, and how the series as a whole pushes the boundaries of literary excellence to reflect the diverse range of voices in our country.
"With our Kanata Classics editions of Jordan Abel’s NISHGA and Kim Thúy’s Ru, David Chariandy and Sharon Bala provide new introductions to these works, reflecting on their brilliance and importance in Canadian literature. Drawing on autobiography and interconnected documents, NISHGA is a groundbreaking meditation that attempts to address the complicated legacies of Canada’s residential school system and contemporary Indigenous experience. RU celebrates life in all its wonders, a study of memory and history through a woman’s girlhood in Vietnam, a Malaysian refugee camp, onward to a new life in Quebec, and into the present as she navigates motherhood.
"We invite you to join us for what promises to be an expansive and inspiring conversation on redesigning the literary classics space."
