GATHER UP, an artist-led programme for dancers, invites celebrated artist Bakani Pick-Up to share their dance and choreographic practice and their current research in this one day workshop. These workshops are open to the curiosity of artists and practitioners aged 18yrs+ who work with contemporary dance, movement improvisation, choreography or other movement practices.
----------------------------------------
Bakani Pick-Up is currently researching into their improvisation practice ‘Kalanga’. The practice incorporates Western Contemporary & Southern African dance forms. Bakani is exploring how we can tune into the body through sound and selective scores to create movement. Additionally they are interested in how Dance gives us an opportunity to come together through listening, witnessing and holding space for each other. In this workshop there will be facilitated open scores that prioritise textures as variation for movement.
Bakani is in the midst of research for a new company work ‘Birds of Paradise’ and they are particularly curious about how movement, even when abstract, allows us to find an emotional connection to the dance and the dancer. How might we consider moving to question and not to solve? Bakani invites you to join in this adventure, to explore how we can emphasis joy and pleasure as a way of dancing without form.
