We've got a special Community Open Day lined up this March in honour of Local Food Week. We're excited to be collaborating with our friends from Seeds to Feeds to bring you a great line up of local food related activities for the day. Join us for as much or as little of the day as you would like.
COMMUNITY CHUTNEY - Bring along a vegetable to add to the Community Pot (by 12:30pm). We’ll forage from the māra and together we’ll make a big pot of delicious chutney.
SEED SWAP - Throughout the day we will have a seed swap table set up. Feel free to pop by anytime to take some seeds home for your own māra or bring some along to swap.
9:30am - 12.30pm COMMUNITY WORKING BEE - Registrations required.
Support our local food by helping to grow it! Many hands make light work - come and get your hands in the māra, learn some skills, and meet some cool people. Please register at www.kaicycle.org.nz/volunteer
12:30PM - 1:30pm, KAI BREAK
Join us for a shared lunch and a chilled hang out in the māra. Please bring some kai to share if you can.
1:00PM - FARM TOUR
If you haven't been to our urban farm before, this is a great opportunity to find out what we're all about and how our farm and community composting works.
1:30pm - 3.oopm KOHA WORKSHOP: INTRODUCTION TO SEED SAVING - Registration require - email [email protected] to register.
Join us for this introductory workshop on seed saving. Seed saving is an ancient practice and an essential tool in creating a circular and resilient food system and enabling kai sovereignty. It also allows us to select for seed that will thrive in our micro-climates, strengthening crops year by year. We'll wānanga about the importance of saving seed, understanding the whakapapa of seeds and plant reproduction, and what you need to know to start saving seed yourself. We'll put our learnings into practice at the farm, saving and processing seed from our summer crops. We will have an area for swapping seed, so please bring along any saved seed you would like to swap. This is a koha workshop and we ask you to pay what you can afford. If that’s a gold coin that is completely fine! If you can afford more we really appreciate it - we are a charity and rely on donations to be able to carry out our mahi. Koha can be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
Registrations required - email [email protected] to sign up.
