KAIA KATER’s new album, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records), opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife O’Donovan, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: “I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest”. It’s an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Kater’s songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. In the years since her 2018 album, Grenades, on Smithsonian Folkways, Kater has taken time to reinvent herself and hone her skills, first attending film school to learn composition, then diving deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album yet. Feeling the pressure as a talented young songwriter, banjo player, and bandleader with three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk Concert under her belt, Kater struggled initially with the expectations of her adopted genre, Americana. “I was factoring everybody else’s perception into my songwriting,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew that no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind, Kater retreated to her apartment in Montréal. Sitting at home with her banjo, the songs unfolded in personal intimacy, revealing windows into the perspective of women and revolutionaries through history. Co-producing with Joe Grass (Elisapie, The Barr Brothers), Kater invited close friends and colleagues O’Donovan and Allison Russell to sing on the album, along with longtime hero and American legend Taj Mahal.

THANYA IYER is both a person and a band. Thanya Iyer the person, is 1/3 of Thanya Iyer the band. The other 2/3s are made up of Alex, Dan, and other great friends. Thanya Iyer (the band) has done a lot (released an album, released a mixtape, played at festivals, played in every time zone in North America, etc). Thanya Iyer (the person) has done all this and then some. Thanya Iyer (the person) is a very busy person. Thanya Iyer (the band) is a very busy band and the sound has evolved to reflect this. Thanya Iyer (the band) struggles to define their music (only when asked, they don’t think about it the rest of the time) and rather than recite a list of genres and sub-genres, they would rather you just listen and tell them. But for the lazy (or busy) people out there maybe Future-Folk is accurate (or vague) enough? Le nouvel album de KAIA KATER, Strange Medicine (à paraître en mai 2024 sur Free Dirt Records), s’ouvre sur une vision obsédante. Accompagnée par Aoife O’Donovan, Kater chante les femmes brûlées sur le bûcher en tant que sorcières à Salem, Massachusetts, au XVIIe siècle, et leur souhait de riposter : « J’ai rêvé que je me déplaçais à travers vous et que je brûlais mon nom dans votre poitrine ». C’est la première salve d’un album qui célèbre le pouvoir des femmes et des peuples opprimés à travers l’histoire, lorsqu’ils se soulèvent et transforment le poison de siècles d’oppression en une étrange sorte de médecine. Les chansons de Kater sont des dialogues avec ces figures historiques et des méditations sur sa propre vie moderne. Au cours des années qui ont suivi son album de 2018, Grenades, sur Smithsonian Folkways, Kater a pris le temps de se réinventer et d’affiner ses compétences, en fréquentant d’abord une école de cinéma pour apprendre la composition, puis en se plongeant plus profondément dans l’écriture de ses chansons pour aboutir à son album le plus personnel à ce jour. En tant que jeune auteur-compositeur, banjoïste et chef d’orchestre talentueux, avec trois albums à succès et un NPR Tiny Desk Concert à son actif, Kater a d’abord eu du mal à répondre aux attentes de son genre d’adoption, l’Americana. « Je tenais compte de la perception des autres dans mon écriture », dit-elle. « Est-ce que j’écrirais plus honnêtement si je savais que personne ne l’entendrait jamais ? C’est avec cette idée en tête que Kater s’est retirée dans son appartement de Montréal. Assise chez elle avec son banjo, les chansons se sont déroulées dans une intimité personnelle, révélant des fenêtres sur la perspective des femmes et des révolutionnaires à travers l’histoire. En coproduction avec Joe Grass (Elisapie, The Barr Brothers), Kater a invité ses amis et collègues O’Donovan et Allison Russell à chanter sur l’album, ainsi que son héros de longue date et la légende américaine Taj Mahal.

THANYA IYER est une personne autant qu’une entité légale. Thanya Iyer, la personne, compose le tiers de Thanya Iyer l’entité légale (que nous appellerons band à partir de maintenant). Les deux autres tiers sont Alex, Daniel ainsi que d’autres merveilleureux complices. Les délits/délires de Thanya Iyer (le band) sont nombreux (deux albums, plusieurs prestations en festival, des shows dans tous les fuseaux horaires de l’Amérique du Nord, et encore…) Thanya Iyer (la personne) en a fait autant, sinon plus.. C’est une personne très occupée. Une grande personne (parfois). Thanya Iyer (le band) est un band en mouvement et cela s’entend dans l’évolution de leur son. Thanya Iyer (le band) se casse la tête à définir leur son (quand on leur pose la question bien entendu, sinon ils n’y pensent même pas) et plutôt que de dresser une liste exhaustive de genres et de sous-genres ils préfèrent qu’on écoute leur musique et qu’on leur explique à eux le casse-tête de leur propre style. Mais pour les paresseux (ou les Grandes Personnes Parfois) peut-être que folk-futuriste suffira? Thanya Iyer (la personne et le band) continueront à partager le bonheur avec tous ceux et celles qu’ils rencontreront en route; à l’aide de leur musique, de discussions, de thé vert et d’et-cetera…
