While her signature party-ready energy remained, she sought to delve deeper into her emotions on songs from her major-label debut album, ‘pain/ pleasure.’
Driven by a desire to challenge stereotypes and assert her identity, she turned to Jeff Tweedy's ‘How To Write One Song’ to help translate her emotions into music. The 14 tracks on ‘pain/pleasure' reflect her personal and professional challenges, offering a spectrum of emotions from longing in "Runway" to defiant self-assurance in "Unbothered." On its lead single, “fund$," Kah-Lo raps about the frustrations of having money owed to her in the music industry. The album embodies the dichotomy of "pain and pleasure."
Kah-Lo initially gained recognition with her feature on Riton’s "Rinse & Repeat" in 2016, which led to a Grammy nomination. Her journey began in Lagos, where she grew up, and she was determined to pursue a career in music. Inspired by a diverse range of artists, her stage name, Kah-Lo, pays homage to the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, known for her autobiographical style. Kah-Lo's lyrics similarly draw from her own life experiences, creating an intimate connection with her music.
Her work has extended to collaborations with artists like Diplo, Idris Elba, Selena Gomez, The Knocks, and more, reflecting her diverse musical influences.
