Appellate Advocacy: You had better bring your flak jacket

A discussion about the essentials of effective advocacy about intermediate courts of appeal and the High Court.

Justice Vandongen aims to give practical assistance to practitioners on how best to present persuasive written submissions in advance of the hearing of an appeal. He also hopes to provide some insights into what makes an effective advocate in the context of the hearing of an appeal, from the perspective of a recent consumer of appellate advocacy.

BIO

Justice Vandongen was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 2 November 2022 and as a judge of the Court of Appeal on 22 May 2023.

His Honour graduated with a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Western Australia and was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1992.

Justice Vandongen was a solicitor before joining the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 1996. He also worked as a Crown Prosecutor in New South Wales before returning to Western Australia to take up the role of Consultant State Prosecutor in 2006.

His Honour joined the Independent Bar in 2008 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2010.
