What does justice look like? Explore fairness, social responsibility, and empathy through political and ethical philosophy.
About this Event

This half-day course turns outward to explore our roles in community and society. Drawing on ideas from political philosophy and social ethics, participants consider different visions of justice, fairness, and collective well-being. Real-life issues—such as inequality or civic responsibility—bring theory into practice. A listening circle offers space to share personal experiences of justice and injustice with compassion and respect, cultivating empathy and insight.

Suggested Reading: The Consolations of Philosophy – Alain de Botton (especially Chapter 4: ‘Consolation for Inadequacy’ and Chapter 5: ‘Consolation for a Broken Heart’)

Agenda

🕑: 10:00 AM
Session 1

Info: We open with a guided group conversation on ‘What is justice?’ before exploring major theories—like the social contract and Rawls’ veil of ignorance. These frameworks are applied to current social issues through short case studies and small group activities.

🕑: 11:30 AM
Session 2

Info: Participants join a facilitated listening circle, sharing experiences of fairness or injustice while practicing deep, respectful listening. A collaborative group exercise follows, inviting participants to examine a civic issue through diverse philosophical perspectives. We close with a group reflection on justice, empathy, and our role in the collective good.
