About this Event
This event will be a provocation around the human rights of disabled people. The catalyst is the story of Connor Sparrowhawk aka Laughing Boy (LB). Connor died because of a system fundamentally indifferent to his well-being. Authorities should have worked with the family, investigated what had gone wrong and clearly apologised and sorted things out, but instead they hid behind reputation, money, and status. It took a grassroots campaign to get any justice at all.
As Baroness Hollins 2023 report explains Connor’s situation is not unique and inhumane conditions and premature death of autistic people and those with a learning disability in such settings is still a major human rights concern. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/independent-care-education-and-treatment-reviews-final-report-2023.
The big question we will address is how is it possible that 80 years after the Nazi T4 atrocity, 23 years after Valuing People, 12 years after the Equality Act and 10 years after Connor’s death, people with learning disabilities are still treated as second class citizens, of lesser value than their brothers and sisters?
The event will take the form of presentations from key speakers and an inclusive round table discussion.
