About this Event
Experience Ukrainian music as it has sounded for centuries 🇺🇦
Join us in Bristol for a special концерт by Jurij Fedynskyi and his family, presented as part of their European tour “Bless My Homeland Forever.”
Jurij Fedynskyi (Юрій Фединський) is a Ukrainian-American musician, composer, torbanist, bandurist and singer-songwriter, producer, bandleader, luthier, cultural activist and pedagogue dedicated to preserving and reviving traditional Ukrainian music. Together with his family, he performs authentic repertoire on rare traditional instruments. He moved to the small Ukrainian village of Kryachkivka (population 500) in Poltava oblast in the late 1990s to work on resurrecting the almost lost tradition of "dumy", lyrical ballads by kobzari - blind Ukrainian bardic musicians.
This programme brings to life the ancient kobzar tradition — travelling musicians and storytellers who preserved spiritual and historical memory through song.
The concert includes:
- traditional sacred songs and epic psalms
- historic ballads and Ukrainian folklore
- live demonstrations of traditional instruments
- a short talk offering insight into Ukraine today
Audiences will also experience what it means to be a kobzar in the modern world - preserving culture in the face of ongoing challenges.
Performed on authentic instruments:
kobza • bandura • torban
