July is officially recognized as World Watercolor Month, a global celebration of creativity, color, experimentation, and the beautiful unpredictability of watercolor. Founded in 2016, the movement encourages artists around the world to explore watercolor throughout the month of July and celebrate the joy of artistic expression. ()This July, Midtown Arthouse invites watercolor artists of all styles and experience levels to apply for our July Watercolor Art Show.
From dreamy washes and delicate florals to bold abstraction, illustration, mixed media, landscapes, portraiture, and experimental techniques — watercolor is a medium filled with surprise, movement, emotion, and endless possibility.
And for artists who usually work in other mediums… we invite you to ask:
What happens when water leads the way?
Maybe this is the month to loosen up, layer differently, let colors bleed, explore transparency, or simply play again. Watercolor teaches surrender, spontaneity, and trust in the process — something every creative spirit can benefit from.
We welcome:
Traditional watercolor
Gouache
Ink + watercolor combinations
Mixed media with watercolor elements
Experimental and contemporary approaches
Whether you are a lifelong watercolor painter or just watercolor-curious, come make a splash with us this July.
Soft. Wild. Layered. Fluid. Unexpected.
Just like life itself.
