Julia will be speaking about two renowned 17th century women artists.
Artemisia Gentileschi, the daughter of an artist, grew up in Rome where her father taught her to paint. When aged 17, she was raped by painter Agostino Tassi. This violent episode and the subsequent trial are generally regarded as having affected her subject matter.
Judith Leyster was a Dutch painter who became well-known for her genre paintings.
Julia will look at the works by these two women and compare them to works on similar subjects by male artists and point out key differences.
