Joy and grief in Lewis’s other writings and his life
CS Lewis (1898–1963) was born in Belfast. A brilliant academic, he was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected
to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement.
He converted to Christianity in 1931 and, in addition to his academic work, became a writer of works explaining and commending the Christian faith. He made broadcasts during the Second World War which were later published as "Mere Christianity". He wrote the acknowledged classic fantasy novels "The Chronicles of Narnia" and a science fiction trilogy, both series with significant underlying Christian themes.
