About this Event
Join Us for A Journey Through American Song!
Join Areté Vocal Ensemble on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 2:00 PM in Samuelson Chapel for a powerful season finale celebrating the roots of American spiritual music.
Areté concludes its 17th season with a vibrant journey into the heart of America’s sacred musical traditions. Under the direction of Dr. Wyant Morton, the ensemble explores 18th-century New England psalmody, 19th-century folk hymns from the rural South, and the electrifying energy of early gospel song. Drawing from historic collections such as Kentucky Harmony and The Sacred Harp, this program honors the rich legacy of shape-note singing and the enduring spirit of communal worship.
The concert will feature music by early American composer William Billings, beloved hymn arrangements by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, and contemporary reflections on sacred tradition, including Shawn Kirchner’s energetic Brightest and Best.
Known for its artistry, passion, and adventurous programming, Areté brings these timeless songs to life with clarity, power, and heartfelt expression. Join us for an inspiring afternoon that celebrates the faith, resilience, and musical heritage at the foundation of America’s spiritual soundscape.
