Strange Love is an exhibition of recent collages, inspired by John Stezaker's fascination with fairy tales, myths, and metamorphosis, in which he uses outdated media images. These images evoke a magical enchantment that seems to be at risk of being lost in today’s visual culture, where we no longer experience images as magical, but merely as transparent communication channels.
Stezaker’s work restores the fundamental strangeness of images through alienation and metamorphosis, a theme that often recurs in his oeuvre. His famous Masks series combines postcards and photos into new forms, inviting the viewer to bridge different worlds.
The exhibition also includes his Spells series, where human figures merge with animal shapes, referring to pareidolia, our tendency to see faces in random configurations. Many of the works were created during lockdown, when Stezaker revisited the illustrated fairy tale books of his childhood, such as Arabian Nights and Water Babies, which are at the core of his personal love affair with images.
