About this Event
Come join us at Finn's Place for an exciting event celebrating the life of local Southside resident John Maclean (1879-1923), a schoolteacher, socialist agitator, and adult education tutor most famous for his opposition to the First World War.
Maclean has become emblematic of a distinctive Scottish radical tradition, and stands as a key figure of ‘Red Clydeside’ understood as a historical period covering working-class struggles such as the 1915 Rent Strikes and the 1919 forty-hours strike.
What was the role of print media in Maclean’s work and in the defining struggles of ‘Red Clydeside’? This session explores Maclean’s relationship to the mainstream press and his work as a journalist for local socialist newspapers. We will look at different newspapers (including the Glasgow Herald, Maclean’s Vanguard, and Tom Johnston’s weekly Forward) and consider how they were used for the purposes of education and clarification, as well as amplification and distortion.
Our speaker is Jonas Thoreson, PhD candidate in English Literature at the University of Glasgow. His research focusses on print culture, class conflict, and the public sphere in Scotland, c. 1850-1920s
This in-person event is a great opportunity to delve into the history of this influential figure and discuss his impact on society. Don't miss out on this chance to explore the fascinating journey of John Maclean!
The presentation will be preceded by our AGM. All welcome, refreshments available.
