The tale of a man and the memory that haunts him, River City One is the poetic and compassionate story of John Walker, a lawyer and ex-Marine adrift in a nameless city. Home from the war, he has become a man on the edge, quietly raging against the people he must now work for and live among—the kind of people incapable of understanding the terror he felt in combat and the guilt he carries in his heart.When he meets Ruth, a beautiful, famous singer traveling through the city, John discovers a new passion for living. But as the lies pile up, he takes more and more foolish risks to hold onto his family and the newfound love that threatens them both. Moving and lyrical, River City One is the story of a man discovering that the hardest part of going to war is coming home to face yourself.
John J. Waters graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. For six years he served as a Scout Sniper platoon commander and ground intelligence officer, completing deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Horn of Africa. After leaving the Marines, John earned his law degree and began writing on veterans and military affairs for RealClearPolitics based in Washington, DC. River City One is his first novel.

Q: Do I need to register?
A: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above. Registering ahead of time helps us with scheduling, book ordering, and other decisions that are made several weeks prior to the event. The more info we have ahead of time, the better.
With a registered list, we can also easily and directly communicate event updates such as postponements or cancellations.
If you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.
Walk-ins are always welcome, but seating decisions are made based on registered attendance and seating priority is given to registered attendees first.
Q: Are in store events free?
A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Q: Are masks required?
A: Masks are not required to browse in the store or at most events. Some events may come with a request for masking for the health and safety of the author. If so it will be noted here whenever possible.
