Hot horns meet soulful vocals at BlueShore at CapU, Nov. 24, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $47 all in.
New Orleans-based R&B and gospel singer John Boutté teams up with Vancouver’s sassiest mini-orchestra Queer as Funk and soul sensation Dawn Pemberton for an entertaining concert of Motown, soul and funk music spiced with Louisiana-style dynamism.
A BlueShore at CapU favourite, John Boutté’s shows are all about energy and soul. His gorgeous voice and deep groove make standards like “Fly Me To the Moon” fresh again. He can evoke Sam Cooke, but his spirit is all New Orleans. Reviewing Boutté’s latest album, A Well Tempered Boutté, OffBeat raves, “This is above all a singer’s album, and you’re unlikely to hear a better vocal disc this year.”
Local sensation Queer as Funk are renowned for their tight rhythm section, blazing horns, and fabulous vocals. The nonet brings together the city’s best musicians in a high-energy dance band, whose repertoire ranges from classics of the ’60s and ’70s (Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder) to contemporary pop favourites (Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake). There’s nothing this tight-knit band loves more than performing together, and that love is palpable to audiences everywhere.
Joining Boutté and Queer as Funk on stage is Vancouver's doyenne of funk Dawn Pemberton. “Her honey-soaked pipes have earned her a coveted spot among Canada's top vocalists,” says the Vancouver Sun.
Opening the show is Terminal City Brass Band. The Vancouver group plays a full-on range of good vibes, from trad jazz and to funk to anything else that crosses the minds of players Michael Coury (trumpet), Tim Sars (sax), Brian Harding (trombone), Marc Lindy (tuba), and Liam MacDonald (percussion).
