Joe Steels and his band perform an exciting set fusing Celtic folk and jazz themes.
Brought together by a return to their northern homelands of Cumbria and Northumberland, this is a group that thrives on the wellspring of inspiration flowing from the countryside and heritage around them. Powerful melodies derived from folk and Celtic themes metamorphose with jazz harmony and rhythm in a fusion of genres that is full of excitement, optimism and heartfelt connectivity. The group move between lyrical storytelling and fearless improvisation, delivering a rare balance of precision and soul striving to reach and inspire new audiences. "Wonderful!" Nikki Iles.
Joe continues to establish himself as an exciting guitarist in British jazz, having played with the likes of Andy Panayi, Ross Stanley, Julian Nicholas, and Arnie Somogyi. Drawing inspiration from a deep love of the tradition in jazz, as well as infusing elements of other genres such as folk, rock and contemporary music. Joe’s music is full of joy and optimism, being driven by strong melody and innovation.
His new album ‘A Blue Patch’ to be released in October draws together a selection of narratives taken from various aspects of his life and is more broadly a commentary on his belief in music as a vital part of what it is to be human; the euphoric moments, the times that test us and just simply being . ‘A Blue Patch references the parting of the clouds, allowing us to be immersed in the sun, whilst ‘Between the Stars’ is about life’s grey moments; the complex and ambiguous moments and choices in life that challenge us and don’t fit into a neat framework. Ultimately the album presents an optimistic perspective that music is integral to all human emotional experiences additionally giving opportunities to experience life in the moment; it is the lifeblood that provides acceptance, freedom and liberation from what is happening around us.
