Fergus and Matt perform an exciting set blending folk and jazz on saxophone and piano.
Matt Carmichael is a saxophonist and composer that BBC Music Magazine heralds as “a distinctive new voice in a crowded scene”. Matt continues to grow from strength to strength with his powerfully emotive blend of melodic Jazz and Folk music. His live band have been playing together since their teens, forming a unique chemistry and sound with collective improvisation at the heart of each performance. He has performed throughout Europe at Bimhuis, Celtic Connections, Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, Womex as well as being a guest soloist with the Grammy Award winning WDR Big Band in Germany. Matt’s debut album Where Will The River Flow was critically acclaimed, amassing over 5 Million streams and he was subsequently signed to the renowned Jazz label Edition Records who released his second album Marram in October 2022. Some of the musicians Matt has collaborated with include Fergus McCreadie, Rob Luft, Bob Mintzer, WDR Big Band, corto.alto, Charlie Stewart, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Kathleen MacInness, Liv Andrea Hauge, Innes White, Juliette Lemoine, Kim Carnie and Rachel Sermanni. His upcoming third album Dancing With Embers will be released in March 2025.
Fergus McCreadie is one of the most exciting jazz pianists on the world stage today. With a unique blend of Jazz and Scottish folk inspired by his country’s sublime landscapes, his music captures the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, with an appeal that extends far beyond the constraints of genre.Released on Edition Records to instant critical acclaim, Fergus’s 2022 album Forest Floor catapulted him into the international spotlight. The album topped the UK Jazz & Blues charts, prompted sold-out performances across the UK, praise from BBC 6Music, The Times, NME and earned him a 2022 Mercury Prize shortlist nomination, the 2022 Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year Award as well as the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year Award - the first jazz artist ever to be awarded the prize.Fergus has an innate depth, flair and natural expression that communicates beyond his years. His ability to transition from a full flowing, radiant pulse-wash of sound to a tranquil stillness in a moment is simply breathtaking. Whilst his music is built on the folk traditions he grew up with, it’s the versatility of rhythm and colour from the most delicate shades to the highest energy that is most captivating.
