Biotech careers panel: explore jobs, pivots & pathways across industry, startups & beyond. Talks + Q&A with experts.
About this Event

Join us for an engaging panel event exploring careers across the biotechnology landscape. The Brisbane node of Synthetic Biology Australasia (SBA) is excited to host three speakers representing different corners of the biotech ecosystem—industry, startups, and translational research.

This event will feature short talks from each speaker, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A, offering practical insights into the breadth of opportunities available in biotech today.

• Our panelists will share their career journeys, including transitions from academia into industry and alternative pathways.
• They will discuss the current biotech job landscape, highlighting opportunities both inside and outside the lab.
• The session will also explore career pivots—how scientists can move into roles such as business development, recruitment, operations, and innovation.

Whether you’re a student, researcher, or professional considering your next move, this event will provide a valuable overview of the diverse career paths shaping the future of biotech.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear firsthand perspectives from across the sector and gain insight into where a career in biotech can take you.

Speakers

Dr Mark Thomas
Recruitment Consultant, mexec

Mark transitioned from academia into industry in 2021 after completing a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Technology Sydney. As a Recruitment Consultant with mexec, he has partnered with more than 50 private and ASX-listed organisations across Australia’s life sciences ecosystem, with a focus on early-stage biotech and medtech companies.

In this session, Mark will share insights into hiring trends, what employers are looking for, and how candidates can position themselves for roles across the biotech sector.

Dr Brendan Kidd
Program Facilitator, CSIRO

Dr Brendan Kidd is a Program Facilitator at CSIRO, supporting the Queensland Government–funded Regional University Industry Collaboration program. He brings experience across research organisations, startups, and not-for-profits, helping SMEs develop research projects in partnership with universities.

In his talk, Brendan will draw on his experience across academia and industry to highlight pathways into translational research, collaboration, and innovation-driven careers.

Dr Natasha Korica
Lab Community Manager, Life Science Incubator

Dr Natasha Korica is Lab Community Manager at the Life Science Incubator in Brisbane, where she supports startups and R&D teams within a collaborative biotech ecosystem. She has a background spanning academic research, GMP manufacturing, and business development across organisations including QIMR Berghofer, CCRM Australia, and ARM Hub.

Her experience includes drug discovery, cancer genomics, and the development and manufacturing of advanced cell therapies. She has also worked closely with startups and SMEs to support technology translation and commercialisation.

In this session, Natasha will provide insight into careers at the interface of science and business, including roles in incubators, manufacturing, and the startup ecosystem.

As always, the event will feature complimentary food and drinks. Enjoy refreshments while networking with fellow synthetic biology enthusiasts, researchers, and professionals.
