You are warmly invited into a world where music becomes myth and sound becomes alchemy. Composer and cellist Jo Quail, together with the Wilmink Project Orkest and some very special guests, invite you on a journey through invocation, supplication, creation, and rebirth — an evening where ancient archetypes awaken and resonate in the present moment. The evening will include a world premiere of a new composition, created specially, after extensive research, to honour Enschede’s transformation over seven centuries.
This special concert has its origins in the close and long-standing friendship and collaboration between conductor Jos Pijnappel – also artistic director of the Wilmink Project Orchestra – and the renowned British cellist and composer Jo Quail. On the initiative of Pijnappel, Jo Quail and her friends Maria Franz (Heilung), Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (Obake, O.R.k.), Tom Atherton (Thing) and Lucie Dehli (Vicious Circle, Elephant Leaf) will share the stage this evening with an impressive, 100-piece Wilmink Project Orchestra under his musical direction.
The bond between cellist and composer Jo Quail and conductor Jos Pijnappel and Enschede goes back more than thirty years. Their shared interest in alternative music led to a long-term collaboration on a variety of projects with choirs and orchestras across Europe, including their performance at Dunk! Festival in Ghent with the Wilmink Project Orchestra, the premiere of Jo Quail’s commissioned work The Cartographer at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, and her orchestral compositions performed at the National Taptoe in The Ahoy Rotterdam.
The first half of the programme draws us deep into myth and magic — a ritual of sound, symbol, and transformation accompanied by the extraordinary voices of Maria Franz, Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, and Lucie Dehli.
The second half unveils the world premiere of new commissioned work Loom Piece, composed by Jo Quail for the Wilmink Theatre and Project Orkest, and the people of Enschede, celebrating 700 years of the city.
Performed by the magnificent 100-piece orchestra of the Wilmink Theatre, conducted by Jos Pijnappel and driven by the elemental pulse and hybrid percussive artistry of Tom Atherton — the beating heart of the ensemble — this is more than a concert: it is a transcendental celebration of unity, community, and creative spirit.
A one-off event in a breathtaking setting — this constellation of artists, this sound, this night — will never be repeated.
