Ragtime fingerstyle guitarist, bluesman, singer and one man band with his harmonica playing sometimes added in the mix, Stiles goes in quite varied and surprising directions as a songwriter but the songs have old souls. Stiles has opened solo many a show at the Napa Uptown, Bimbo’s, Mystic Theater, Villa Montalvo and many other theaters and venues, notably for Keb’ Mo’, BB King, Mary Chapin Carpenter, JJ Cale, Etta James and a host of others and he has toured internationally. He has been on the scene for many years with his ragtime and early jazz band, Hobo Paradise, as well as in his own band and playing jazz guitar in the swing extravaganza Sven and the Majestic Orchestra, but solo acoustic is his specialty where his guitar takes on the fullness of a piano player. Stiles attained his doctorate at UC Berkeley in 2019, taking a hiatus from the rigors of being a touring musician to the realm of pure creativity in proving new theorems in mathematics but let’s say that his music is much more motivated by the heart than the mind. He also recorded his 6th or so full-length album, the dreamy and magical eponymous JL Stiles, during his days at UC Berkeley and never stopped performing fully. Music keeps finding him and now, currently based in El Cerrito with fresh material, expect to hear a lot more from Stiles again in the upcoming months and years.
