About Jimmy Jorge and the Latin Express:

Jimmy Jorge was born in Chicago on Jan. 28, 1967. His mother moved to Philadelphia in 1969 with his 5 brothers and has since lived there. Jimmy Jorge began his musical journey by taking up the violin in 5th grade. Moving to Chicago, he studied the Caribbean steel drums in 8th grade. In high school, he studied the trumpet for the next 3 years and played in the school’s marching band. In his 4th year of high school, Jimmy Jorge moved back to Philadelphia where he continued studying the trumpet but took an interest in percussion… specifically the conga drums. After graduating high school, Jimmy Jorge continued to study the conga drums with various percussionists, then eventually became a founding member of a couple local bands called Conjunto Cache and Orquesta Fuego where he would record his first salsa album. Not being satisfied with just playing congas, Jimmy Jorge eventually learned to play the bongos, timbales, tambora, minor percussion and even started singing background. He would eventually play with various salsa groups such as Orq. Cupey, Orq. La Opinion, Orq. La Precaucion and many others. He eventually started playing with American wedding bands as a percussionist. Bands such as The John Albert dance band (with whom he recorded an album entitled Salsa Americana), Eddie Bruce Orq., Marc Rose Orq., The Cutting Edge Orqs., and many more. Later in his musical career he would perform with such superstars as Jerry Rivera and Charlie Cruz doing background vocals as well as recording artists such as Adriel Gonzalez and Ommy Cardona.
