About this Event
On March 27 & 28, join us as we proudly present the world premiere of an original program conceived and curated by 7th House in cooperation with The Jim Henson Legacy: JIM HENSON: EXPERIMENTS IN VISUAL THINKING, a very special theatrical gathering of the experimental and philosophically-minded short films of one of the most imaginative creative forces of the twentieth century, Jim Henson — featuring a rare screening of his surreal and cerebral 1969 film THE CUBE in its entirety.
Widely beloved as the creator of the gleefully anarchic Muppets and a key architect of the educationally revolutionary Sesame Street, Henson’s work was always guided by a deep ethos—one that embraced eccentricity and strangeness as virtues, celebrated the beauty of difference and the power of found family, and insisted on kindness, curiosity, and care for both one another and the world around us. Above all, Henson believed in the boundless potential of imagination, and in “play”—in goofing around—not as mere frivolity but as a creative and philosophical imperative.
Long before the global success of the Muppets, Henson was already exploring these ideas through a series of formally daring early works that grappled directly with questions of time, perception, imagination, and the nature of the mind. Drawn largely from that fertile period, the films in this program reveal a different but deeply connected side of Henson’s creative life: playful yet probing works where surreal humor and inventive visual experimentation become vehicles for exploring temporality, imagination, and consciousness.
The program gathers a range of Henson’s adventurous television experiments alongside his legendary, self-starring, surrealist comedy short TIME PIECE (1965), culminating in a rare presentation of his surreal and philosophical 1969 television drama THE CUBE, almost never screened in its entirety and presented here complete. This is not a Muppet showcase—though there is one small exception: a brief clip from Henson’s first TV program (featuring a nascent Kermit), the delightful source of the phrase “visual thinking” that inspired the event’s title. Instead, the program foregrounds a series of inventive works that reveal Henson’s imagination at its most exploratory and intellectually curious.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to encounter the visionary and searching imagination that animated the work of Jim Henson on the big screen.
