Tottenham Heritage Walks with Bruce Castle Museum and Archive bring you a free and fascinating Jewish History Walking tour around Tottenham.
This is a second date for a tour (the first tour occurs on 22 January 2023; this second tour has the same content)
Starting at the corner of Tottenham High Road and West Green Road in South Tottenham, your guide Carol Hebbs will lead you on a tour along Tottenham High Road to share stories and community histories about Jewish-owned shops and businesses once found there. It will highlight important places for the community: the former High Cross synagogue of the Tottenham Hebrew Congregation, and the previous Jewish Home and Hospital on the High Road. And it will also look at the hostility experienced in the area after the Aliens Act of 1905 and the ‘Tottenham Outrage’ incident in 1909.
Stories will also include those who worked at the former large factories at Tottenham Hale, including world class names Lebus and Gestetner that employed thousands, many from working class Jewish families who settled in the streets between The Hale and Lansdowne Road.
The tour will continue up Bruce Grove and end at Bruce Castle Museum. Just outside the Museum in the Park is the Holocaust Memorial Garden of Remembrance. This is a place of reflection where Carol will share some of the testimonies remembered here of Holocaust survivors who settled in Haringey. The Museum is open at 1pm where you can see some original historical items on display about the local Jewish community histories.
The tour will last approximately 2 hours, and will end at Bruce Castle Museum. Please wear sensible footwear and dress for the weather and for walking.
