This class is for level 2+ and advanced students. It is not open to beginners. It starts on Mon 2 February and runs for 8 weeks till 23 March.Students must have completed an 8-week block with ring-making and bezel settings or equivalent. If you have not done one of our 8-week beginner’s classes or are unsure of your level because you may have done a few different shorter classes, please contact us and we can advise you.
This more advanced class is ideal for those who are already competent at soldering simple joins, annealing and basic tool use on their own.
A more advanced set of students means that your tutor can support you and the group to take on more exciting and complex challenges. They will work with the group to find appropriate projects for you and for the class as a whole. Each 8-week block may focus on a particular skill topic, rather than doing loads of different topics with each student over the block. This means the students will benefit from a more in-depth learning experience, supported practice and peer support from fellow students.
Level 2 students learn to solder more competently on their own using chainmaking as a way to develop their fine soldering skills. They may create a simple stone setting or ring alongside this challenge project so they have something to hone their skills that they are familiar with, as well as take on a new skill. Their silver project could be a pendant on a handmade chain, a charm bracelet or a more complex bezel setting.
Level 3 and above students are encouraged to work on their design skills and try new and challenging techniques. They should prepare to have one or two simple projects they can work on self-directed in class: more chains or simple bezel settings are ideal - to help them strengthen their soldering skills - alongside a challenge project that might be a shelf setting (an adaptation of a bezel setting that can take faceted stones), a tube setting or a larger bezel setting for a box or brooch.
This class fee does NOT include materials for any student.
All metals and stones, as well as quality findings and chains, are available for purchase each week in the studio. Students are encouraged to keep their silver scrap and find ways to use it thriftily in future projects!
