About this Event
Shetland fiddle and piano duo Jenna Reid and Harris Playfair are one of the most dynamically exciting and soulfully expressive partnerships in traditional music.
Their understanding, forged over the years, allows the two to negotiate tunes including James Scott Skinner’s notoriously challenging ‘The Mathematician and The Hurricane’ with fabulous musicianship and to deliver Scott Skinner’s emotional ‘Hector the Hero’, with great melodic sensitivity.
Born into a musical family in Quarff, Jenna grew up in the Shetland tradition, learning from the local master Willie Hunter and has taken the skills he instilled in her across the world. She was a founder member of the award-winning fiddle quartet Rant, featured in Deaf Shepherd and appeared in Transatlantic Sessions alongside Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, as well as being a major force in the frontline of Highlands and Islands celebrants Blazin’ Fiddles.
Her duo with the ultra-resourceful and inventive Harris has featured on recordings including Live in Shetland and Working Hands (with Mr McFalls Chamber) and is showcased on their 2023 release One Day, which captures the unparalleled musical relationship between two of Scotland’s most virtuosic traditional musicians.
Expect quicksilver playing on reels and strathspeys and stunningly beautiful, original slow airs in an evening of superb musical accomplishment.
