We have a once in a lifetime double-header show for you this evening. Our featured set will be an album release event for virtuoso trombonist Nanami Haruta, in a quartet with Christopher Minami, guitar, Jim Alfredson, organ, and Jazz Tuesdays host Jeff Shoup, drums.In place of our usual jam session, we will present a special second set featuring MSU alum and rising jazz star Jocelyn Gould!

Nanami Haruta was born in 2001, in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Nanami started playing classical piano at the age of 5, and at age 8 joined her elementary school's brass band, where she started playing the trombone and became introduced to jazz. She started performing concerts in Sapporo at 13 years old.
In 2016, at age 14, Nanami participated in the Hokkaido Groove Camp, won the grand prize known as the "Berklee Award," and the following year traveled to Boston, MA, where she attended a Berklee College of Music 5-week Summer Performance Program. In 2019 she participated in the Seiko Summer Jazz Camp and won Most Outstanding Student Award.
After moving to Tokyo in 2020, Nanami has expanded her activities by participating in performances and recordings with the Aaron Choulai Raw Denshi Sextet, Akihiro Yoshimoto group, and Shunské G & The Peas. In 2022, her first album "II" was released. Nanami is currently a Full Time student in the Michigan State University Jazz Studies program, studying with Professor Michael Dease.

JUNO winner Jocelyn Gould has been called “a leader in the next generation of great mainstream jazz guitarists” by Howard Paul, CEO of Benedetto Guitars. Her debut release as a leader, Elegant Traveler, won a 2021 JUNO for Jazz Album of the Year. Her latest release, Sonic Bouquet, was nominated for a JUNO award for Jazz Album of the Year.
Jocelyn has spent the last several years touring extensively. In early 2024 she completed a 10 week, 45 city tour produced by Jazz At Lincoln Center and IMG artists as part of a show called “Sing and Swing”. She performed as a leader at acclaimed venues including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Birdland and Pizza Express. She spent the fall of 2023 touring her latest release, Sonic Bouquet. This tour saw her European debut in the UK and Spain, as well as an extensive tour of the US and Canada.
Jocelyn Gould has performed internationally in the groups of Grammy nominated vocalist Freddy Cole, trumpeter Etienne Charles and DownBeat Critics Poll winner trombonist Michael Dease. She can be heard on albums led by Michael Dease, Caity Gyorgy, Jon Gordon, Diego Rivera, Randy Napoleon, and Will Bonness.
