About this Event

Ronny Whyte was a beloved jazz pianist, vocalist, and songwriter whose elegance and artistry lit up the American jazz and cabaret scenes for more than six decades. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1936, he moved to New York City in the early 1960s, quickly establishing himself as a singular talent at the piano with a warm, urbane vocal style that drew comparisons to Nat King Cole and Bobby Short.

Ronny performed extensively in celebrated clubs, concert halls, and festivals across the United States and abroad. A mainstay at venues like Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle and the Algonquin’s Oak Room, he became known for his sophisticated interpretations of the Great American Songbook as well as his sensitive original compositions. His work as a lyricist included collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Marian McPartland, while his recordings earned acclaim for their elegance, wit, and timeless swing.

A champion of American popular song, Ronny was a longtime member of the Mabel Mercer Foundation, often performing in and curating events that highlighted the enduring artistry of cabaret and classic jazz. Beyond the stage, he was deeply admired by fellow musicians and fans for his generosity, charm, and unwavering dedication to keeping the tradition of jazz vocals and piano alive for future generations.

Ronny Whyte’s music embodied grace and joy, leaving behind a rich legacy of recordings and memories. He will be remembered not only for his artistry but also for the kindness, humor, and sophistication he brought to every room he entered.
