About this Event
Ken Peplowski (1959–2026) was an acclaimed American jazz clarinetist and tenor saxophonist whose artistry, wit, and deep musical knowledge made him one of the most beloved figures in contemporary jazz. Renowned for bridging the worlds of swing and modern jazz, he helped revitalize the role of the clarinet in a genre where it had long been overshadowed, bringing both technical brilliance and expressive warmth to every performance.
Born on May 23, 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio, Peplowski began playing music at an early age, performing professionally while still a child. He came of age steeped in the traditions of swing and big band jazz, influenced by masters such as Benny Goodman, whose legacy would remain central to his musical identity. After a brief period of study at Cleveland State University, he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, marking the beginning of a distinguished professional career that would span nearly five decades.
Peplowski rose to international prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, performing with Goodman’s final band and establishing himself as a leading voice in mainstream jazz. Over the course of his career, he recorded more than 70 albums as a leader and appeared on countless others as a sideman, collaborating with a wide range of artists including Mel Tormé, Peggy Lee, Hank Jones, and Rosemary Clooney. His versatility allowed him to move effortlessly between small-group settings, big bands, and orchestral collaborations, while maintaining a distinctive voice rooted in swing tradition.
Beyond the bandstand, Peplowski was a dedicated educator and curator. He served as music director and artistic leader for several major jazz festivals, including the Oregon Coast Jazz Party, and was deeply committed to mentoring younger musicians. Known for his quick humor and generosity, he brought a spirit of camaraderie and joy to every musical setting, earning the admiration of colleagues and audiences alike.
In 2021, Peplowski was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a serious form of blood cancer, which he faced with resilience and characteristic humor. Despite the challenges of illness, he continued to perform, record, and tour, demonstrating an unwavering devotion to his craft.
Ken Peplowski died on February 2, 2026, at the age of 66 while performing aboard a jazz cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. His sudden passing marked the loss of a singular musical voice and a deeply respected member of the international jazz community.
Peplowski’s legacy endures through his extensive discography, his influence on generations of musicians, and the countless performances in which he brought vitality, elegance, and humor to the music he loved. He was not only a master instrumentalist, but also a consummate entertainer who understood, above all, the joy of connecting with an audience.
