Grateful Brass reimagines the iconic music of the Grateful Dead with an instrumentation centered on horns in place of guitars, supported by drums and vocals. The music digs deep into the Grateful Dead songbook through bold re-imaginings infused with the ebullient spirit of New Orleans second line, trance-like Afrobeat grooves, Balkan brass energy, and Afro-Cuban polyrhythms, all grounded in a heavy foundation of funk.
Grateful Brass is led by Adam Theis, who worked closely with Bob Weir for over four years as a member of The Wolf Pack with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros. Theis’s arrangements were a core part of the Wolf Bros live shows and are featured on multiple releases from 2022–23, including Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros: Live in Colorado, Live in Colorado Vol. 2, and the Ace: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. With Weir’s passing in early 2025, that chapter now carries added weight, grounding Grateful Brass not only in tribute, but in direct creative lineage.
Some of the finest musicians on the West Coast have joined Theis in creating this offshoot of the Bay Area music collective Jazz Mafia, many of whom have long collaborated across the extended Grateful Dead universe, including Mickey Hart, Melvin Seals & JGB, Joe Russo’s Ain’t Dead Yet, Peter Rowan, Reed Mathis, Jackie Greene, Nicki Bluhm, and Cold Blood.
Grateful Brass embraces the ongoing challenge of carrying forward a 60-year tradition of imagination, collective improvisation, and groove-based exploration. This is not a recreation, but a living, breathing homage that invites listeners to fall in love with the Grateful Dead’s music all over again, or for the first time.

- All shows are 21+. Set times and ticket prices are subject to change, and sales are final.
- There is a two drink minimum per guest. Our menu has 15 wines in diverse styles and sophisticated non-alcoholic options. No outside beverages are allowed.
- Outside food is welcome. Food trucks are available most nights around Vasco Row, steps away from our venue. Check www.vascorow.com and www.altamontbeerworks.com for the schedule.
- Dancing is encouraged at Almost Famous, and usually takes place in front of the stage. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a completely unobstructed view to those sitting at bistro tables.
