Born in Matsuyama City, Japan, Motoshi Kosako began with piano and guitar. In Tokyo, he played acoustic and electric guitar in professional Jazz bands, earning praise as “one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians.”
In 1997, he moved to the U.S. and began playing the harp, mostly self-taught. He was Stockton Symphony Orchestra's principal harpist from 2005-2010 and a featured soloist in 2009-2010. In 2007, he won second place in the Lyon & Healy International Jazz & Pop Harp Competition. Harp Column compared his introspective soloing to Keith Jarrett’s.
Kosako performs original compositions and standards, solo and in ensembles. Since 2008, he has toured internationally, giving concerts and workshops, and is considered one of the world's most influential Jazz harpists. He has performed at major festivals, including The Future of Harp in Yokohama, Rio Harp Festival, and World Harp Congress.
He has collaborated with top jazz musicians like Grammy-winning Paul McCandless, Michael Manring, and Chris Garcia. Kosako has released 15 albums: two classical solo albums and 13 jazz/original music albums.
In 2008, he joined Japan's Total Health Research Group, conducting sound healing research. His 2012 article “Total Health and Music” was published in “Science of Public Health.” He holds a B.S. in health science and nursing from University of Tokyo, is a registered nurse and public health nurse, and has a 2nd-degree black belt in Judo.
