About this Event

FRIDAY, NOV 14TH - SAXOPHONIST, GARRETT WINGFIELD

Garrett Wingfield is a composer and saxophonist who actively avoids boundaries and borders in his art making. His compositions “...demonstrate his unique skills as a writer and instigator of group improvisation...” (Free Jazz Blog) and are “...equally informed by disparate influences — as much Ellington as it is Berio, as much Ornette as it is Zappa…” (Nextbop).

Wingfield won a 2018 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award for his composition "Berne Center," which is on his ensemble The Octopod’s album, "Monoliths and Sepulchres."As a saxophonist, Wingfield has performed with musicians all across the spectrum of the jazz world. He was a member of the GRAMMY nominated One O’Clock Lab Band for two years, and has performed alongside Bobby McFerrin, Wycliffe Gordon, and James Morrison. In 2016 he performed with the NDR Bigband at the Elbjazz Festival in Hamburg, Germany. In 2019, he performed multiple headlining concerts with the Anna Jalkéus Group in Nanjing, China.

Recently, he has been active as a performer in a broad variety of musical situations. These include a two-month residency as an ensemble member of the “Kunsthalle for Music” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, an east coast tour with Louis Prima, Jr., and a grant-funded concert at the Moody Center For The Arts in Houston, TX with Vinny Golia and Danny Kamins.

As the COVID-19 crisis came to a head and cancellations began, Garrett was preparing to go on a west coast tour with the avant-rock and jazz outfit Starfruit, out of Dallas, TX. Instead, in an effort to retain a creative thread, he is spending time sculpting new pieces of art out of broken and old saxophones and releasing videos on Instagram of his colleagues and friends washing their hands set to newly composed music.Students! Be sure to score one of the limited free student tickets.
